Short answer
A forced-draught burner uses a fan to supply combustion air to large boilers and process plant. Gas is fed through a gas train containing isolation, filter, governor, safety shut-off valves and often a valve proving system.
The gas train
Typical components are a manual isolation valve, filter, pressure regulator, high and low gas pressure switches, and two automatic safety shut-off valves. Larger burners add valve proving to check the valves seal before each start.
Setting up
Commissioning sets the air/gas ratio across the firing range with a flue gas analyser, and proves every safety device. Annual servicing repeats the combustion checks.
Figures are typical for UK natural gas. The current edition of the relevant IGEM standard and the manufacturer's instructions always take precedence on site.
