How to Become a Commercial Gas Engineer

Short answer

Most commercial gas engineers start as domestic engineers, then complete commercial training and ACS changeover assessments (such as a core commercial assessment plus appliance and pipework categories) before registering those categories with Gas Safe. New entrants can also follow a commercial apprenticeship route.

Typical path

Gain domestic qualifications and site experience, complete a commercial changeover course, pass the core non-domestic assessment, add categories for the work you intend to do (testing and purging, pipework, boilers, catering), then register them with Gas Safe.

Experience matters

Assessment centres expect evidence of supervised work on commercial installations. Many engineers build this working alongside experienced commercial engineers before taking on larger plant and pipework alone.

Figures are typical for UK natural gas. The current edition of the relevant IGEM standard and the manufacturer's instructions always take precedence on site.
