ACS Commercial Gas Categories: What Each One Covers

Short answer

Commercial gas qualifications are built on a core safety assessment (COCN1 for most non-domestic engineers), with appliance and pipework categories added on top. Common ones include TPCP1 and TPCP1A for testing and purging, ICPN1 for pipework installation, CIGA1 and CODNCO1 for boilers and plant, and CCCN1 or COMCAT categories for catering.

Core safety

The core assessment covers gas safety legislation, combustion, ventilation, flues, unsafe situations and emergency procedures. Changeover routes exist for engineers moving from domestic to commercial work.

Pipework, testing and purging

Testing and purging categories split by installation size: TPCP1A for smaller installations and TPCP1 for larger and more complex systems. Pipework installation categories cover sizes and pressures above domestic limits.

Appliance categories

Separate categories cover commercial boilers and indirect-fired plant, direct-fired air heaters, overhead radiant heaters, commercial catering appliances, laundry, and water heaters. The exact category codes change from time to time, so always check the current Gas Safe card against the work being done.

Figures are typical for UK natural gas. The current edition of the relevant IGEM standard and the manufacturer's instructions always take precedence on site.
