Short answer
Commercial sites mainly use diaphragm meters for small and medium loads, rotary (rotary displacement) meters for medium to large loads, turbine meters for large steady flows, and increasingly ultrasonic meters. Many are fitted with data loggers or AMR for remote reading.
Diaphragm
Flexible diaphragms measure gas by volume. Robust and accurate at low flows; common from U6 up to around U160 on shops, restaurants and offices.
Rotary
Two lobed rotors measure volume in a compact body. Good across a wide flow range and common in plant rooms and industrial units.
Turbine and ultrasonic
Turbine meters suit large, steady flows such as energy centres. Ultrasonic meters measure flow electronically with no moving parts.
Figures are typical for UK natural gas. The current edition of the relevant IGEM standard and the manufacturer's instructions always take precedence on site.
