Gas Meter Pressure Problems

Short answer

Meter pressure problems show up as low or unstable outlet pressure, high pressure drop across the meter installation under load, or creeping pressure when demand stops. The usual causes are a faulty or wrongly set meter regulator, a choked filter, a meter undersized for the current load, or low network pressure.

Tests to carry out

Standing and working pressure at the meter outlet test point; lock-up (pressure rise after demand stops) to check the regulator closes properly; and the pressure drop under maximum load. Compare outlet pressure with the expected setting, typically around 21 mbar for low pressure supplies.

Symptoms and causes

Large drop under load: undersized meter or regulator, or a restriction. Pressure rising above normal after demand stops: regulator not locking up. Fluctuating outlet pressure: sticking regulator or debris. Low pressure across the whole site on cold days: network constraint.

Responsibility

The meter, regulator and service usually belong to the meter asset manager or gas transporter, not the building. A Gas Safe engineer can diagnose and record the fault, but adjustment or replacement of the meter regulator is normally arranged through the supplier. The installation downstream is the building owner's responsibility.

Figures are typical for UK natural gas. The current edition of the relevant IGEM standard and the manufacturer's instructions always take precedence on site.
